Purposeful Action

My daughter loves listening to Trans Siberian Orchestra (TSO). She purchased three tickets for the afternoon performance.

I must tell you the music was too loud.

The lights flashed too fast.

The fire was too hot.

The played too long (over 3 hours without a break).

The seats were too small.

Yet, I could not thank her enough for exposing me to TSO.

Would I go back and see them again?

How loudly can I say YES! YES! And yet YES again.

Why?

At times they had me in tears, they had me in awe, at other times they had me inspired by their passion, and they had me because they were having fun, they loved what they were doing and they did everything with purpose.

And there was purpose in everything they did; every action, every light that flashed, every flame that flickered, every dance step, the entire experience. It was a purposeful experience.  There was purpose in their fun. There was purpose in their passion. There was purpose in their authenticity. There is a powerful lesson here for us business owners. How do you make you interaction with you clients purposeful so they talk about you the way I am talking about them?

As business owner we sometimes forget that when people buy from us (especially in the services industries) they do so because they have a purpose, something they want to achieve. They want to work with someone who is purposeful and believes their product or service will help them achieve their purpose, has fun doing what they are doing and would do it even if they did not get paid for it.

After every sales call I make, I always ask why they engaged/did not engage me. There are many people who do what I do so why did they choose me? I get many different answers: You wrote a book on management and leadership, you understand my problems, you can help me, I like your process, your book on marketing is my bible, etc. It is different for everyone.

I did write a book on management and leadership. It is called The Platinum Rule for Small Business Mastery (www.amazon.com). It is based on the assumption that your success is 100% dependent on how well you leader, coach, counsel, manage, influence and persuade others to take purposeful action. I hear the same thing about my marketing book: 49 Marketing Secrets (THAT WORK) to Grow Sales. (www.amazon.com)

But mostly I hear, “I can tell by the questions you ask, the presentation you gave, and the way you present yourself that you understand my problems. Because of that I think you can help me.”

What I realized after seeing TSO is that my sales presentation is very purposeful. It has only one purpose: to help someone make an intelligent decision about working with me. I am totally ok with either outcome. I want to work with people who want to work with me. I understand I am not right for everyone. That is OK as well.

Taking a lesson from TSO, I realized I love what I do. I want people to be successful through purpose. I want them to think differently about their business with purpose. I want them to grow personally and professionally with purpose. I want them to use their business as a tool to help them create their ideal life (with purpose).

My entire business is built around this purpose: Inspiring people to purposeful action that leads to successful results! I love the challenge and opportunities this affords me. I can build some purposeful relationships in a purposeful way.

Are you a business owner? If so can you say that you love what you do? Can you say your business has purpose and is on purpose? If not, do not think that lack of purpose does not come through in the sales process? If you are not passionate about your product or service, how do you expect others to?

I would not buy a TSO CD. I really do not like their music. Also, I do not need to buy their music. My daughter has all the CD and I could listen to hers if I wanted to hear the music again. But I will go see them again. Their enthusiasm, passion, joy, professionalism and purpose in what they did were contagious. I want others to feel the same way about interaction with me and my companies, products and services as I felt after the TSO concert.

In my next book called Nine Principles for Inspired Action: A New and Targeted Perspective, (www.amazon.com) I discuss the nine attributes successful people implement in their business daily. The number one principle is used to help you identify your purpose and help you get focused on your intelligent self-interest. Intelligent self-interest is the one thing that drives all that you do. If we do not have intelligent self-interest, we cannot take purposeful action. It is not possible.

The one thing that holds us back is our beliefs about our product, or service and our self; our lack of purpose about our business and our life. If we do not believe in what we want to accomplish, our purpose, the value it has for others, and our contribution to this value, it is hard to take purposeful action.

At this time, make a commitment to yourself to get clear on your intelligent self-interest. Make life easy and create a purpose that drives your behavior, makes the decision making process easier and helps others understand your purpose so they can help; because they will.

Inspiring people to purposeful action that leads to successful results!
