The power of the Right Question.
I was recently in a meeting and we were discussing the importance of asking the right question.
Let me give you an example that came up. One gentleman posed this question.
“How does a chicken cross the road?”
As a group we came up with the answer: “Walk.”
Another gentleman posed the same question a little different way.
“In what ways can a chicken cross the road?”
Each individual had a different answer: “walk, skip, jump, drive, fly, hitch a ride, etc”
You get the point.
The “how” question looks for one answer and one answer only.
The “in what ways” question looks for a variety of answers, invites dialog and sparks creativity.
The “in what ways” questions opens the mind to think in terms of possibilities. The “how” question looks for an answer.
Next time ask yourself in what ways and see how your mind works.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe power of the right question opens us up to the realization that in many cases there is no one right answer. This is a relief as we need as many good answers as we can in dealing with today’s issues. I have heard it said that by mixing questions using who, what, where, why and how actually targets different parts of the brain so that a more whole set of options can be realized.
good point. Many times the best answer is determined by the question and how it is framed. Ask the wrong question - get the wrong answer.
